Reducing Stress by having an Organized Pantry

The two popular locations in our household are the pantry and the fridge and having that somewhat organized is critical to reducing stress, increase savings and having a healthy lifestyle. I may be a small thing to do, but there is nothing that feels good after you have organized a pantry and know where things are exactly.

The pantry in any house is a tricky proposition to take on and I have not reached that level of mastery yet, but am moving that direction.

I had been putting off organizing the pantry entirely over the past couple of weeks. What pushed me to the edge was that I did not have a clear view into what we had. The pantry was getting crazy and we were throwing money out the window repurchasing what we may already have had.

Our pantry is one of those 1970’s pantries with those sliding doors. Not very user friendly, but you have the make the most of what you have.

I took it upon myself to remove everything we had in the pantry and slowly and steadily put things back in a way that made sense.

Here are the steps that I used to organize the pantry. This is just my way of thinking and by no means follows a blue print of organizing pantries.

  1. Declutter: Remove everything that you have in the pantry on the dining table.
  2. Categorize: Categorize things that are similar, such as put all the pasta’s aside in one corner, put all the rice’s in one corner, put all the fish (canned sardines, tuna etc in one corner)
  3. Check for expiration: Check for expiration on packages. Keep in mind some things have an expiration date but when you open them they may not taste expired. For instance, pasta may be good past the expiration.
  4. Donation or giveaway basket: Set a basket aside for donations or give aways. DO NOT put any expired good in here.
  5. Regroup and start putting the things back in the pantry in rows. If you can see in the picture I leveraged the overhead bind to store soups and canned goods.
  6. On the shelves that are visible, put the products that you think will be most consumed. On the top shelf put back ups. 
  7. Label your shelves.
  8. Once you are done, see if the system works for you for a couple of days. If not go back to the drawing board.
