Recycle an Old T Shirt for a New Look

A lot of you may be aware that over the past few years I have been getting more and more into crafts in addition to cooking. Crafting gives me a sense of calm and creativity. Over the weekend, I took a stab at utilizing my limited sewing skills to venture into something totally different and exciting.

I took my daughters old T shirt  ….

and turned into this …. (now the contrast of the fabric is not great …. but the end result is the recycling aspect). I will venture into other more matching contrasts using the same sewing techniques.

This is my first attempt at putting together the steps for a sewing project so bare with me:

  1. I got a 2 yard fabric from Joanne’s fabrics. For those that are not familiar with Joanne’s fabric’s, it is a great store to go to for any sort of crafting project. It certainly is a good place to shop for fabrics. The fabric was on sale so I lucked out.
  2. As you can see in the images below, I cut a rectangle out of the 2 yard fabric measuring 21 inches by 12 inches.
  3. Stitch the cut fabric together from the short side (the right sides facing each other).
  4. Tuck the right side of the T shirt in the right side of the stitched fabric (so that the wrong side of the fabric is facing you). The bottom of the shirt should reach the bottom of the stitched fabric.
  5. Now make sure the edge of the shirt sides and the that of the seam of the stitched fabric are aligned together.
  6. Create the folds and pin the folds together. Repeat on the back side of the shirt.
  7. Sew the fabric at the top twice and three times just so that chu chu/ ruffle at the bottom is sturdy.
  8. Now turn the the bottom chu chu/ ruffle inside out and voila you will see the new looking attire for your little one.
  9. Hem the bottom of the dress and that’s it, you have a recycled dress for your little one).
